Firdaus Ensemble

El nombre del grupo se inspira en la palabra árabe Firdaus con la que se designa al lugar más elevado en el paraiso, tanto la palabra paraiso como al firdaus provienen del persa y significan un jardin cerrado. El origen intercultural del nombre del grupo refleja el carácter de éste ya que sus musicos provienen de diferentes paises.

Sus componentes aspiran a expresar a través de la música la memoria del mundo del que venimos y a donde nos dirigimos.A la vez que los músicos afinan sus instrumentos afinan también sus corazones para recibir la inspiración del momento y de esta forma elevar a la audiencia a un estado de contemplación espiritual. El grupo musical Al Firdaus Ensemble tiene su centro en Granada cuenta con profesionales de Inglaterra, España y Marruecos y fue fundado en el año 2012 por Ali Keeler quien fue violinista y vocal del grupo Al Kauthar.

El estilo tan original de su música es un resumen de diferentes estilos musicales e incluye composiciones originales occidentales con influencias célticas y de tradiciones flamencas asi como arreglos de canciones provenientes del rico legado de la tradición sufí de fuentes árabes, andalusí y turcas. Las canciones son principalmente en árabe con letra de la poesia de los grandes maestros sufís del al andalus y del mundo árabe tales como Ibn Arabi y Al Shushtari. Su repertorio incluye adaptaciones de poemas escritos en aljamiado, la lengua escrita por los moriscos españoles usando la escritura árabe. El grupo puede actuar como trio, cuarteto o como quinteto adaptandose a diferentes combinaciones de instrumentos dependiendo de la situación. Tocan instrumentos clásicos del mundo árabe y del occidente además de la guitarra flamenca y cuenta con cantantes solistas o de coro.

The group takes its inspiration from Al Firdaus which is the Arabic name for the most elevated place in Paradise. Both words Paradise and Al Firdaus are derived from an ancient Persian word meaning enclosed garden. The intercultural nature of this name reflects the character of the group in which musicians from different countries and cultural backgrounds are brought together with one purpose.

Their aspiration is to express through music the memory of the heavenly world we come from and to which we long to return. Just as the musicians tune their instruments they need to tune their hearts to receive the inspiration of the moment and bring themselves and their audience into a state of spiritual contemplation.

Al Firdaus Ensemble based in Granada was founded in 2012 by Ali keeler the former lead singer and violinist of the group Al Kauthar and is made up of former members of Al Kauthar and some new members including musicians from England, Spain and Morrocco.

The unique sound of their music is due to a synthesis of different musical styles. These include original compositions of a more Western classical character with influences from both Celtic and Flamenco traditions and arrangements of songs drawn from the rich heritage of traditional sufi music from Arabic, Andalusi and Turkish sources. The words of the songs are mainly in Arabic drawn from the poetry of great sufis from Al Andalus and the Arab world such as Ibn Arabi and Al Shushtari. Also within their repetoire are musical adaptations of poems in aljamiado the Spanish language written by the Moriscos using the Arabic script.

The group is versatile and can perform in different formations as a trio, quartet, quintet and septet with different combinations of instruments depending on the situation. They use a combination of Arabic and Western classical instruments in addition to the flamenco guitar, and have a range of singers, some of whom are soloists and others who sing in the choruses.
